We had been letting our road tax and a couple of insurance renewals slip for years. Nothing catastrophic — just the sort of thing that gets pushed back every month. The tracker setup was a morning's work and the orientation session was genuinely useful. The spreadsheet has been running for eight months and we have not missed a deadline since.

My wife and I enrolled in the Communication Retainer after a period where important household decisions kept getting deferred. The first session felt slightly formal, honestly, but by the third one we had settled into it. Having someone external in the room — just to chair and keep notes — made a real difference. The written summaries are particularly useful for tracking what we agreed to do.

I bought the Letter-of-Wishes workbook after my mother suggested it during a conversation about her own belongings. I was sceptical at first — I am not particularly sentimental — but the prompts turned out to be well-thought-out. They helped me identify preferences I had not really articulated before. I did the optional review session and it was worth the extra cost to talk through the wording.

We are a three-generation household and the communication retainer was suggested by my sister who had used it separately. The facilitator was patient and managed to keep our sessions productive even when the conversations went a little sideways. We covered ground in six sessions that we had been going around for two years. I do not think we would have gotten there without the structure.

Good service. The renewal tracker has been useful for our parents' household, which had quite a few items that no one was reliably keeping track of — several vehicle renewals, two passports, and an insurance policy that was quietly lapsing. The orientation session was brief but covered what was needed. Would recommend for households where the admin tends to fall to one person.

I bought the workbook initially for myself but ended up doing the review session too. I appreciated that Siti was upfront about what the document is — a personal record, not anything with legal standing. That honesty was actually reassuring. The prompts for belongings with sentimental value were particularly thoughtful. The process took me a few weeks but I went at my own pace.

In Detail

Three household accounts

TK

The Krishnamurthy household, Damansara

Renewal Tracker — Setup completed January 2025

The situation

A household of five adults with three cars, two properties, and four people whose identity documents expired at different times. One family member was managing all renewals informally — by memory and occasional reminders — and the system had already missed one vehicle insurance renewal.

What happened

After the setup session, the spreadsheet was built around all existing renewal items and shared with three family members, not just one. The orientation included a short explanation of how to add new items as they arise. The household now runs the tracker with no single point of failure.

Four months on

No lapses. The family added their home broadband contract to the tracker independently after setup. Three family members now share tracking responsibility rather than one.

"The orientation session made the difference — we came away knowing how to use it."

YH

The Yusuf household, Puchong

Communication Retainer — six sessions, October 2024 – March 2025

The situation

Two adult siblings managing a shared household after their father relocated to Johor Bahru. There were unresolved questions about shared household expenses, the care of some family belongings, and an extended family visit schedule that neither sibling had been willing to discuss without an argument.

What happened

Six monthly sessions over six months. The first two covered household expenses and arrived at an arrangement both siblings found acceptable. Sessions three and four addressed the family belonging questions. Sessions five and six — which both described as the easiest — were used to talk through the visit schedule.

After the retainer

The household continues to use the written summaries as a reference when questions arise. Both siblings noted that having the summaries in writing reduced the number of "but I thought we agreed..." conversations.

"The written summaries were what we actually needed — a record of what had been decided."

GC

Grace Chew, Setapak

Letter-of-Wishes Workbook — completed February 2025

The situation

A retired teacher in her early sixties who had been meaning for several years to write down what she wanted to happen to her belongings — including a number of items with family significance — but had never found a good starting point and did not want to involve a lawyer for what she described as "just a note to my children."

What happened

Grace completed the workbook over about four weeks, setting it aside between sessions. She found the prompt sections for sentimental items particularly useful and worked through them in two sittings. She added the optional review session to check the wording on a few passages.

The outcome

A completed personal letter of wishes, reviewed with a facilitator, shared with her two children. The letter is informal and non-binding, as Grace intended. She describes it as "the thing I was putting off for three years, finished in four weeks."

"It was easier than I expected, once I had the right prompts in front of me."
